To people out of Africa, the term “African Sun” is representative of golden skies that stretch across the African Savana. The same term however means a different thing to Tetu Shani fans this is because it is one of the songs that they sing at his concerts. The song “African Sun “which helped Tetu Shani to become a finalist at the “Empawa 100” competition set him apart as one of the alternative voices of African Music.

Singer Tetu Shani boasts of a network of loyal fans who show up at his concerts. Named the “Tetutribe” this group of fans never miss his concerts. Even as his fans belt out Tetu’s songs, word by word many are still trying to place his style of music.

In September this year, Tetu Shani got a nomination for the prestigious Afrima in the Best Artist in African Rock category his song  ‘Furukazi’ was nominated alongside  ‘Kelewele’ by Dark Suburb, ‘Peace in Limbe’ by Franck Biyong  ‘Structures’ by Rash and  ‘Beat Time’ by The Isomers. Rash Band from Kenya ended up winning in the category.

Even without winning at the Afrima’s Tetu Shani’s songwriting skills and singing prowess sets him apart as one of the pioneers of Indie Rock and alternative sound in Kenya and Africa. Tetu Shani’s brilliance as a singer and songwriter got him a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to produce a soundtrack for their special “Blood and Water”.
