The campaign for the July 16, 2026 Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election has intensified, with allegations of voter inducement, large-scale distribution of household items and heightened political activity dominating the contest in Nyandarua County. The by-election, triggered by the death of former area MP David Njuguna Kiaraho on March 29, 2026, has attracted national political attention as the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) battle for control of the constituency. Political observers say the outcome is expected to serve as an early measure of political influence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Controversy escalated on July 7, 2026, after Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria publicly disclosed that he had spent KSh1.2 million during campaign activities in the constituency. The legislator explained that campaign coordinators were requesting voters’ national identity cards to verify that beneficiaries were registered in polling stations assigned to his campaign team, dismissing claims that the exercise was intended to interfere with the electoral process. His remarks ignited criticism from sections of the public, with some questioning whether the campaign activities amounted to voter bribery. The comments also renewed debate over the role of money in electoral campaigns and the enforcement of election laws by relevant authorities.

At the same time, residents in parts of Ol Kalou have been receiving government-branded mattresses, subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, boats and other household items through programmes launched in early July 2026 by senior government officials. Government representatives have maintained that the initiatives are part of ongoing development and economic empowerment efforts rather than election-related incentives. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whose DCP party has fielded Sammy Kamau Ngotho in the race, accused the government on July 6, 2026 of using the distribution exercise to influence voters. He alleged that some residents were being asked to surrender their national identity cards in exchange for the items and urged voters not to hand over documents required for voting. Gachagua encouraged residents to accept any government assistance offered but cautioned them against exchanging their constitutional right to vote for campaign benefits.
Government officials have rejected accusations that the programmes are politically motivated. Senior Presidential Adviser Moses Kuria defended the distribution of subsidised LPG cylinders during the launch of the programme in July 2026, saying the initiative seeks to improve household access to clean cooking energy while reducing dependence on firewood and charcoal. He also maintained that the projects form part of the government’s broader development agenda for the constituency.“ This is the blueprint for a modernized Ol Kalou and by backing Muchina, we are choosing an era of continuous practical solutions that directly uplift the standard of living for every resident,” he wrote on X. Beyond the distribution of household items, Ol Kalou has witnessed an increase in government development activities in recent months. These include road rehabilitation projects, expansion of electricity connectivity, establishment of digital hubs and other infrastructure initiatives, developments that critics argue have gathered pace since the by-election was announced in April 2026. Government leaders, however, insist the projects were planned long before the parliamentary seat fell vacant and are simply being implemented. The contest has attracted extensive involvement from senior political leaders, Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries and Members of Parliament, making it one of the country’s most closely watched by-elections.
With campaigning entering its final days, scrutiny is expected to remain on campaign financing, distribution of public resources and compliance with electoral laws as residents prepare to elect their next Member of Parliament on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
