Yesterday, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) held the Energy Management Awards (EMA) gala dinner. This annual event celebrates outstanding energy management and honors companies that have significantly reduced their energy usage through efficient practices and technologies.
Kenya Breweries Limited – Nairobi emerged as the overall winner of the 2024 EMA during the 20th edition of the awards, themed “Celebrating 20 Years of Efficiency in Energy Management and Sustainability.” British American Tobacco Kenya PLC ā GLT Plant Thika was the runner-up.
At the ceremony, Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Davis Chirchir, emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in enhancing energy efficiency and conservation in Kenya. He applauded the milestones achieved in cost-saving and energy management, commending the industries for their dedication. Chirchir also acknowledged the International Energy Agency (IEA) for organizing the first international conference on energy efficiency in Kenya during Sustainability Week.
PS Energy, Alex Wachira, highlighted that energy efficiency is a key pillar of the Kenya Kwanza government. The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has collaborated with the Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation at KAM to promote energy efficiency across various industries.
Director General of EPRA, Daniel Kiptoo, stressed the importance of individual contributions to energy management and pledged continued efforts to develop regulations supporting green growth.
KAM Chairman Rajan Shah commended local manufacturers for adopting sustainable production methods, noting that their energy management initiatives have saved Ksh 15 billion and 2,000 GWh, which translates to nearly 100 MW of freed capacity for other users. Since the awards’ inception in 2004, about 500 participants have contributed to these significant savings.
