On Thursday, October 23, the Malaysian High Commission in Nairobi hosted a captivating film showcase featuring the Malaysian animated blockbuster BoBoiBoy Movie 2. The event, held from 4 pm to 6 pm, brought together diplomats, media professionals, and film enthusiasts for an evening of culture, animation, and storytelling.
Among the invited guests were representatives from AFTTTI Training Institute and Icon Radio, highlighting the growing collaboration between Kenyan and Malaysian creatives. AFTTTI was represented by Edwine Agesa, the Dean of Students and a radio presenter at Icon Radio, alongside Yvonne Mwangi, the institute’s Marketing Officer and Head of Admissions. Joining them were several Diploma in Animation students from AFTTTI, who were excited to experience firsthand how animation serves as a bridge between culture and film.
The screening of BoBoiBoy Movie 2 produced by Malaysia’s Monsta Studios (formerly Animonsta) was more than just entertainment. It served as an eye-opening educational opportunity, demonstrating how animated storytelling can merge artistry, technology, and cultural identity. The film’s high production values and engaging narrative showcased the global potential of animation as a major force in modern filmmaking.
Beyond the movie itself, the event offered attendees a glimpse into Malaysian culture, from its creative industries to its diplomatic and developmental activities in Kenya. For the students, this was a unique chance to see how animation contributes not only to film but also to cultural diplomacy and national branding.
The Malaysian High Commission in Nairobi plays a vital role in fostering these cultural and educational exchanges. Established in 2005, the mission represents Malaysia in Kenya and across East Africa, while also serving as Malaysia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Offices in Nairobi (UNEP and UN-Habitat). Located in Gigiri, the High Commission has been instrumental in strengthening Kenya-Malaysia ties through programs in trade, education, and the arts.
For AFTTTI, the experience reinforced the importance of exposing students to international film environments. According to Dean Edwine Agesa, such opportunities help students appreciate how their training connects to real world possibilities. “Events like this inspire our students to think globally, and to see that animation isn’t just a class subject it’s a thriving international industry,” he said.
The collaboration between AFTTTI and Icon Radio continues to open doors for creative exchange, industry exposure, and cultural learning. The Malaysian Film Showcase was yet another milestone in that journey one that left the students not only entertained but deeply inspired.
