WHY EKO DYDDA IS THE FACE OF GOSPEL RAP

Eko Dydda has been a present figure in the gospel rap industry ever since he stepped in the limelight over a decade ago with his signature stammer style of rap. The rapper has never swayed from his original path and has remained one of the most prominent figures in the game.

The gospel rapper started off doing rap around the same time rapper like Octopizzo and Khaligraph Jones were coming up. Back then the gospel industry in Kenya was the most vibrant being pushed by probably the best music awards show in Groove Awards. Eko Dydda was among the recipients of the awards as he continued to represent gospel in his music.

Eko Dydda is one of the people that made gospel feel relatable and ended up influencing multiple artists to pursue a career in gospel rap. Through Groove awards, his prominence started showing and his creativity in using Sheng and his stammering style of rap made him a unique artist to listen to.

Groove Awards came and went and a few gospel artists led by Bahati and Willy Paul switched to secular to keep up with the trend. Hip Hop heads wished the same would happen with Eko Dydda but the rapper maintained course. The rapper never switched allegiance just because gospel was no longer getting the attention as before.

Ten years later, Eko Dydda is still doing gospel music and whenever the topic of Christian rap is brought up his name never misses on the list. Tracks such as I’m Very Rare that came out recently proves that he still has that push and motivation from when he started.

His latest collaboration with gospel stars Boss of MOG and Guardian Angel showed his versatility in delivering on a fast paced beat. His ‘cool’ rap also fit perfectly with Guardian Angel who has and still is one of the most successful gospel artists in the country.
