Sho Madjozi: Meet the colorful South African pop Star

To many Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif or Sho Madjozi could easily pass as an artist who has had it easy on her musical journey. Behind the colored-haired bubbly personality and ever jovial is a story of a multi-talented artist who has had to go against all odds to reach the global stage.

From growing up without a father who got divorced from her mum when she was young to having to study in different countries. Sho is a true example of determination and dedication to music. Sho Madjozi started out as “Maya the Rapper” where she wrote poems about politics when she was in the US for her studies before returning to South Africa to further her musical career.

Besides music, she has managed to be influential in the fashion world by her acute sense of style. Her famous hairstyle which she credits to the Fulani of West Africa and Tuareg women in North Africa ended up being a style to many girls in Africa.

In 2019 Madjozi caught the attention of her childhood icon WWE superstar John Cena through her song “John Cena” which went viral after her performance at the Colors show. The famous song later went on to be nominated as the Best African Song of the Year at the African Talent Awards. In the same year, Sho was named Forbes 30 under 30 for her exemplary contribution to the music and entertainment scene.


Even with all the success that has decorated her career Madjozi still does her best to remain humble and not let her current success make her lose focus in her musical journey.
