Pope Francis has officially approved a landmark ruling that allows Roman Catholic priests to administer blessings to same-sex couples 🏳️‍🌈 as long as they are not part of regular Church rituals or liturgies.

The Vatican’s doctrinal office said such blessings would not legitimize irregular situations but be a sign that #God welcomes all. It should in no way be confused with the sacrament of heterosexual marriage, it said.

Priests have long blessed a wide variety of people, offering a prayer asking for God’s help and presence. The Vatican had long said it could not bless same-sex couples because it would undermine church doctrine that marriage is only between a man and a woman.
